Searching and Browsing

How and why should I access my library's catalog?

Your library's catalog has been specially designed for your library, and includes content not found in the shared NOBLE catalog, such as local events and resources.

When you're using your library's catalog, you'll still be searching the whole NOBLE collection.  For example, if you are searching the Danvers catalog, search results from Danvers will be highlighted but you can select All NOBLE Libraries to see titles from all NOBLE libraries.

You can do a more precise search by selecting a specific search type like Author, Title, Subject, etc.

How can I limit the list of search results?

When you enter a search, you'll see a numbered list of titles that match your search terms, with the titles that match the best at the top of the list.  This can be a long list, and there are several ways to limit the search results to be more specific about what you're looking for.  One way is to use the filters in the left sidebar. For example, you can limit the Audience to Adult material and the Format to Book. Other filters let you limit by the library's Shelving Location (for example, Adult Fiction, Children's Picture Books, etc.), when the titles were added to the collection, the author, and more.

Using Filters

You can also make a search more specific by changing from a Keyword search to Author, Title, Title Starts With, Series or Subject.

Other ways to limit a search include putting quotation marks around multiple words to only find records that are exact match for that phrase -- searching "white mountains" will only find anything with that exact phrase, but not a book called "White snow falling on the mountain."

What are Browse Categories?

Browse categories are simlar to displays in your library.  They appear on the main page of the catalog and provide a way to visually browse through selected titles in the library collection. As you click on the categories across the top, you usually see a list of subcategories appear.

In this screenshot, New Adult selected, and we can see subcategories for Fiction, Nonfiction, etc., leading to either a display of cover images or a list of titles.  Libraries use these to feature many different types of material, including New York Times bestseller list, Book Award winners, and featured selections for seasons, holidays and celebrations, trending topics and more.  Be sure to click on the arrows on the left and right to cycle through all the categories on your selected catalog.

        Placing and Managing Holds

How do I place holds on physical items, like books, DVDs, etc.?

To request an item, select Place Hold on the right-hand side of the search results, next to the desired format. Books will appear first, followed by other formats in alphabetical order. If placing a hold here, the system will choose the best record in the catalog based on availability and the number of copies on record.

Place Hold on All Book Editions

We can see more specific information about editions by clicking on Show Edition or Show Editions under the Format. Book Editions

If you are already signed in to your account, a pop-up will appear asking to confirm details such as pickup location, which volume is being requested if applicable, and contact information. If available, your email and default phone number will populate automatically. After reviewing the information and updating as needed, click Submit Hold Request

        Hold Options

How do I manage my holds pickup library?

Your preferred holds pickup location in the new catalog will default to your chosen selection from the old catalog.  If you prefer to pick up items from a different library,  you may choose to set up the three preferred pickup locations in the new catalog. When a preferred pickup location is set, it will appear at the top of available options when placing a hold in the new catalog.

How can I cancel a hold?

To cancel a hold, login to your account and go to Your Account > Titles on Hold. You can cancel holds for physical materials as well as digital content on OverDrive/Libby.

You can either use the Cancel button on the right to cancel a specific hold, or use the Cancel Selected or Cancel All boxes in addition to selecting titles via the checkboxes to the left of the cover images.

How do I place holds or check out eContent?

All NOBLE libraries share a OverDrive/Libby collection, and some also have hoopla collections. In this example, there are five formats for "Isaac's storm" -- two physical formats, Book and Large Print, and three eContent formats, the standard Libby eBook format, the Libby Kindle eBook format, and the Libby eAudiobook format.

You have the option to Preview any of the Libby formats, seeing or hearing the start of the book.  The eBook formats have the status Available Online, and can be checked out by selecting the Borrow with Libby button.  You have to be logged in to do this.  Titles can be read online using a pop-up reader in the catalog, or on any device using the Libby app.  If you're new to Libby, here's a link to more information: Read Free with the Libby App

The eAudiobook has the status Checked Out, but you can use the Place Hold button to get on the waiting list.

How can I suspend and unsuspend holds?

You can suspend holds to keep them from being filled while you are on vacation, when you are particularly busy, or for any reason.  You will not lose your place in the waiting list, your hold will still move up the list, the system will just skip to the next person if you reach the top of the list while the hold is suspended.  When you unsuspend the hold, you still have your proper place in the list.

To suspend and unsuspend holds, log in to your account and go to Your Account > Titles on Hold.

You can either use the Suspend Hold button on the right to suspend a specific hold, or use the Suspend Selected or Suspend All boxes in addition to selecting titles via the checkboxes to the left of the cover images.  Once you've clicked one of the Suspend buttons, a pop-up box will appear. Within the pop-up, you may optionally choose a date for the hold to auotmatically activate. If a date is not entered, you can manually activate the hold when you are ready for it. To finish suspending your hold, select Suspend Hold.
